Dental Root Elevators
Dental root elevators are specialized tools used by dentists to facilitate tooth extraction.
Root Elevators have a handle and a tip and are designed to loosen teeth from their sockets before the final removal using forceps. They are particularly useful in the extraction of teeth that are broken, impacted, or firmly embedded in the jawbone.
Types of Dental Root Elevators
Several types of dental root elevators are available, each with a unique design for specific procedures:
Straight Elevators: have a flat, chisel-like tip and are primarily used for luxating teeth or separating them from adjacent teeth e.g. Coupland
Triangular Elevators: are ideal for removing fractured root tips and are often used with other instruments.
Pick Elevators: have a pointed tip, pick elevators are excellent for retrieving small root fragments that have broken off deep within the socket e.g. Heidbrink.
Luxating Elevators: have a thinner and sharper tip. Luxating elevators are used to sever and wedge the periodontal ligament, loosening the tooth.
Uses of Dental Root Elevators
Dental root elevators play an essential role in various dental procedures including tooth extraction and removal of broken roots.
Elevators are used to loosen teeth before forceps extraction, making the process more efficient and less traumatic.
